Your generous donations help BC Wheelchair Sports Association provide quality wheelchair sports opportunities to people with physical disabilities across the province. Since 1971, we’ve helped thousands of people with disabilities live active, healthy lifestyles and worked with government and community partners to reduce barriers that prevent people with disabilities from reaching their full potential. Donations fund our many sports programs, purchase wheelchairs and other adaptive equipment, fund our Junior Sport Camp, help athletes travel to competitions and much, much more.
When you support wheelchair sports, you help athletes both on and off the court. People with disabilities who play wheelchair sports:
- are more likely to be employed
- have fewer hospital stays
- have fewer secondary health complications
- have less stress, depression and anxiety
- are more involved in their community
- have more independence
- are more likely to travel
- have higher confidence
- have less body fat
- have greater muscle mass
- have more friends
- and have a better quality of life than inactive peers
More importantly, however, your donations enable us to help a child like Tomas adapt to life with a disability after he sustained a spinal cord injury in a biking accident, or find the next Michelle Stilwell, whose wheelchair racing career opened the doors to more than she thought possible.
