In the world of wheelchair athletics, opportunities exist in Track and Field and Road Racing. Athletics was one of the earliest sports for people with disabilities dating back to the first Stoke Mandeville games in 1948. Since the sport's early days, wheelchair athletics has grown into a sport that offers exciting opportunities from the recreational level straight through to Olympic competition. Track and field offers the usual disciplines including 100m, 200m, 400m, 800m, 1500m, 5000m, 10000m and the marathon. The throwing events, including javelin, shot-put and discus are also available. Road Racing offers the thrill of wheeling through city streets in the 5k, 10k, half marathon and full marathon events.
Opportunities
BCWSA is a proud sponsor of the WC Race Series which is a non-profit society specializing in wheelchair racing and hand cycling. The WC racing series was founded in 1995 as a developmental wheelchair racing program. BCWSA and the WC Race Series have worked together advocating on behalf of wheelchair racers in BC creating wheelchair divisions in many road races and track events around the province.
The WC Race Series has created an environment that is based on peer support and welcomes all levels of racers from the beginner to the seasoned veteran. Weekly training sessions are scheduled throughout the season, allowing more experienced racers to provide advice on everything from equipment to technique.
In addition, BCWSA hosts clinics at the beginning of each year for adults and juniors. Clinics are hosted by elite level athletes and coaches. Information presented covers everything from equipment, technique, training, nutrition to mental training techniques.
There are opportunities to participate in track locally and at the BC Games, Western Canada Summer Games and Canada Games. With the guidance of BCWSA, athletes can work through the system, accessing coaching, travel assistance, clinics and many other resources to seek out whatever level of competition that they strive for.
Why participate in wheelchair racing?
Wheelchair racing is a wonderful sport for individuals who are interested in challenging themselves or just interested in having some fun and staying fit. Recreational and beginner athletes are able to participate right alongside those who chose to participate at a higher level of competition. Within the umbrella of the WC Race Series and BCWSA, individuals can participate without feeling threatened by an overly competitive environment.
