| The KidSport Fund |
The KidSport Fund is the charitable arm of Sport BC that helps overcome the financial obstacles that may limit children from playing sport. The fund supports the belief that young people can learn more than athletic skills from sport and that sport provides a life-long opportunity for self expression and self discovery. Since 1993 KidSport has made it possible for close to 7,000 children from all over BC to participate in sport. Nearly 60 different sports in 120 different communities have KidSport kids. All donations go directly to the kids.
The KidSport Fund Facts
The KidSport Fund is the charitable arm of Sport BC and is designed to "remove the financial obstacles that prevent underprivileged children from playing sport in British Columbia".
- Since 1993, KidSport has helped nearly 800 minor sport organizations in 150 communities throughout BC fund children who might not otherwise have had a sports experience.
- Each child that applies is eligible for up to $100 for one season of sport. The cheque is usually made out directly to the league. Only one sport per year per child is eligible.
- An adjudicator must sign off each application form. An adjudicator is a social worker, school counselor, school principal or public health nurse who verifies the financial need of the family.
- Since 1993 the KidSport Fund has raised and allocated over $750,000 to kids in BC. More than 7000 kids between the ages of 6 and 18 have had the chance to participate in sports because of the KidSport Fund.
- KidSport was started in BC by Sport BC and now operates in Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, New Brunswick, PEI, and Nova Scotia. Sport BC is the administrator of the national fund, the Canadian Council of Provincial and Territorial Sport Federations.
- There are Community Funds in Whistler, Penticton, Fort St. John and Campbell River where the money raised helps local kids play sport.
- The KidSport Fund receives no government funding. Every dollar raised comes from events and fundraisers.
- All donations are tax deductible.
