Demo Team Program

In the mid-seventies, BC Wheelchair Sports initiated an awareness program through wheelchair sports demonstrations. Since that initiation, the program has matured and broadened its focus. The BC Wheelchair Sports Demonstration Team program was originally designed to inform the public of the abilities of disabled individuals participating in sports. Although public awareness continues to grow, at the same time it is an issue we must constantly address. The Demo Team has a broad focus emphasizing safety at work and play, promotion of wheelchair sports, awareness of the abilities of disabled athletes, increasing membership, reverse integration, and providing opportunities for all to participate in sport and recreation.

Today, Demo Team members visit schools, institutions, sporting events, sport camps, and community events. The Team presentation consists of an introduction of the demonstration format, Demo Team members, and a brief demonstration of wheelchair skills and rules for wheelchair basketball or wheelchair rugby. The team then challenges the students, teachers, media team, community groups, and other sport teams to a basketball game in wheelchairs. Following the game team members speak individually highlighting athletic performances and how they came to be disabled - many through injuries at work or in automobile accidents. The audience is then encouraged to ask questions and approach the athletes on a personal basis.

The effect of the Demo Team's message is very positive and has a significant impact on the attitudes and preconceived notions of its audience, particularly young people. In a study done by a Graduate student of the School of Physical Education and Recreation, UBC, she concludes: "...it appears that the British Columbia Wheelchair Sports Demonstration Team Presentation is a valuable instrument in the positive modification of attitudes of junior high school students toward physically disabled persons."

BC Wheelchair Sports is committed to the Demonstration Team program and wants to see it grow to its fullest potential. The demand is there and we must meet the challenge.
