Canadian athletes surpass all expectations!
The performance of the Canadian athletes at the 2004 Paralympic Summer
Games in Athens surpassed all expectations of the Canadian Paralympic
Committee. The team concluded the 12th Paralympiad with a total of 28
gold medals, 19 silver medals and 25 bronze medals for a total of 72
medals. The CPC also reached another objective with a top-eight finish in
the nations standings. Canada was third in the gold medal count and
seventh for total medals.
Athletes, coaches and support staff from BC contributed in a BIG way to
this medal count. Here's a look at the results:
Men's Wheelchair Basketball - Gold
BC Team Members: Jaimie Borisoff; Richard Peter
Women's Wheelchair Basketball - Bronze
BC Team Members: Marni Abbott; Shira Golden; Jennifer Krempien; Arley McNeney;
Head Coach - Tim Frick; Assistant Coach - Trish Nicholson; Manager -
Carrie Linegar; Therapist - Paige Larson
Wheelchair Rugby - Silver
BC Team Members: Garett Hickling; Ian Chan
Athletics
BC Team Members: Alan Bergman; Karen March; Kelly Smith; Teri Thorson;
Equipment Manager - Erik Hagreen
Kelly Smith achieved a Silver medal finish in the Marathon and Teri
Thorson set personal bests in the semi finals and finals in the 400
meters on the track.
Target Sports
BC Team Member: Chris Trifonidis
Chris achieved a personal best and made it to the finals
Wheelchair Tennis
BC Team Members: Sarah Hunter; Yuka Chokyu; Brian McPhate; Coach - Janet
Petras
Sarah made it to the top 8 in singles and 4th in doubles
Brian made it to 4th in doubles
