2001 National Wheelchair Tennis Championships set for Labour Day weekend in Richmond

August 18, 2001 - BC Wheelchair Sports Association will host the 2001 Canadian Wheelchair Tennis Championships August 30th to September 2nd at the Richmond Tennis Club at 6820 Gilbert Road, Richmond.

This national championship showcases some of the finest wheelchair tennis players in the world, many of whom have just returned from the 2001 World Team Cup in Sion, Switzerland.

Canadian wheelchair tennis team members competing in the upcoming National championships include:

Yuka Chokyu (Vancouver) - Paralympic athlete; currently ranked 11th internationally in singles and 6th in doubles; #1 ranked in women's wheelchair tennis in Canada.

Paul Johnson (Victoria) - Nine time defending champion; BCWSA Athlete of the Year; Paralympic athlete; currently ranked 13th internationally in singles and 12th in doubles; #1 ranked in Canada in men's wheelchair tennis.

Sarah Hunter (Surrey) - Recently took the Quad Open singles title at the 2001 Cajun Classic in Baton Rouge, LA. Currently ranked 8th internationally in singles and 9th in doubles; #1 ranked quad tennis player in Canada.

Brian McPhate (New Westminster) - Former Paralympic Silver Medallist in quad rugby and currently 2nd ranked quad tennis player in Canada. Quad tennis has recently been approved for the Paralympic Games in Greece in 2004.

The 2001 Canadian Wheelchair Tennis Championships, August 30th to September 2nd are supported by The Richmond Tennis Club, City of Richmond, YY Tennis Club, BC Wheelchair Tennis Association, Tennis BC, Tennis Canada, and the Hilton Vancouver Airport.
