| Quebec Wins BC Wheelchair Basketball National Championships |
April 2, 2002 - The Fleur de Lys of Quebec won the 2002 Canadian Junior Wheelchair Basketball Finals with a 56-53 defeat of Variety Village of Toronto that was held at the Pinetree Community Centre in Coquitlam from March 29th to March 31st, 2002 (Friday to Sunday).
Quebec got to the final game with an 80-69 defeat of BC in the
semi-final. Variety Village defeated Alberta 69-58 in their semi-final.
The Fleur de Lys is an all-star team who were the National Champions in
1998, silver medallists in 1999 at the Canada Games in Cornerbrook,
Nfld. And silver medallists at the 1999, 2000 and 2001 Junior National championships.
British Columbia won the bronze medal with a 64-50 win over Alberta.
All-Stars included James Mahon (Variety Village), Matt Yousie
(Saskatchewan), Bo Hedges (BC), Abdi Dini (Variety Village) and Kim
Joines (Alberta). Marc Antoine Ducharme of Quebec was named the MVP of
the tournament.
In the mini division, Variety Village Red defeated Variety Village White
for the gold medal by a score of 56-51. All-Stars for the mini division
included Cameron Crosby (BC), Greg Westlake (Variety Village), Sunera
Samarkoon (BC), Shayne Smith (Variety Village) and Coti Koski (BC).
Dayton Sophia of Variety Village was named the MVP.
Hosting the Nationals was a first for BC. It was the 9th Annual Junior
Championships and only the 2nd time the Finals have occurred west of
Ontario since its inception.
